Piracy has been a phenomenon all over the world and trough out centuries. In the last decades a few geographic areas are specific high-risk areas. These are: The Street of Malacca, the waters around The Filipinas and the Somali coastline. The latest areas are The Golf of Guinea, West African Coastline and The Amazon Delta in Brazil.

During the last years pirates / robbers attacked, hijacked and robbed vessels, kidnapped crews along the coast, rivers, anchorages, ports and surrounding waters. Attacks were even reported up to 170nm from the coastline. In some incidents, pirates hijacked the vessels for several days and ransacked the vessels and stole part cargo, usually gas and oil. A number of crewmembers were injured and kidnapped or even killed in past attacks.
